Seven Suggestions for Entrepreneurial Success

The following are excerpts from a terrific article that was written by Guy Kawasaki, a founder and the chief executive of Garage.com, which unites entrepreneurs with investors. Please check out his website at www.garage.com. This article has been modified for length.

1) Embrace the unknown. Successful companies make the transition into new areas, because they embrace and embody the unknown. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you must create the unknown.

2) Never ask people to do something that you wouldn't do. If you wouldn't buy your product, why would you think anyone else would? Imagine if airline execs flew in coach and ate the food. The world would be a different place.

3) Focus on implementation. Good ideas are easy, but implementation is the key. Unimplemented ideas are useless.

4) Don't be paranoid. The key to entrepreneurship is the uniqueness of your ability to implement and defend your idea. Successful entrepreneurs share their ideas, share their equity, share their dreams and bare their souls.

5) Pursue entrepreneurship for the right reasons. Joy should be the ultimate goal. It comes from pursuing interests and passions that result in happiness, such as: building a great team, family, friends and from making the world a better place. Create products or services that you love.

6) Obey the absolutes. When we are young, it is absolutely wrong to lie, or steal. As we get older, we are tempted to think in relative terms: "I didn't cheat as much as him". This is wrong. There are absolute rights and wrongs. Entrepreneurs have a moral obligation to set high standards.

7) Play to win. Don't let the bozos persuade you to do anything less than try to change the world. And if you lose, be sure you lose while trying something grand! The unexamined life may not be worth living, but the unlived life is not worth examining. Make sure your life is worth examining
